About Chlef
Chlef is the capital of Chlef Province, Algeria. Located in the north of Algeria, 200 kilometres (120ย mi) west of the capital, Algiers. During the French colonial period, it was known as Orlรฉansville, and later renamed El Asnam after independence, referring to the numerous Roman statues found in the area. Following a major earthquake in 1980, the city was renamed Chlef, after the local river, to dissociate it from the superstition that the "ruins" or "idols" brought bad luck.
